Iowa State upset No. 2 Oklahoma, 37-30, on Saturday in what could be the biggest regular-season win in school history. The Cyclones forced seven turnovers, including a strip-sack by Max Llewellyn in the final minutes of the game.

A Signature Win for Iowa State

The win is Iowa State’s second over a top-five team in the Matt Campbell era. The Cyclones also defeated No. 5 Oklahoma in 2017. This marks just the fourth time Iowa State has beaten a top-five team in school history.

“This is the biggest win in Iowa State history,” said Campbell. “This is a special group of guys. They play hard, they play together, and they never give up.”

Llewellyn’s Strip Sack Seals the Win

The Cyclones were clinging to a 34-30 lead with just over two minutes remaining. Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel was sacked by Llewellyn, who forced the fumble. Iowa State recovered the ball and sealed the victory.

“I saw the quarterback drop back to pass, and I just took off,” said Llewellyn. “I was able to get my hand on the ball and knock it out. It was a great feeling to make that play and help my team win.”

Turnovers Prove Costly for Oklahoma

In addition to Llewellyn’s strip-sack, Iowa State forced six other turnovers. The Cyclones intercepted Gabriel three times and recovered three fumbles.

“We just couldn’t overcome the turnovers,” said Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables. “We made too many mistakes and Iowa State made us pay.”

Iowa State Extends Winning Streak

With the win, Iowa State improves to 3-0 on the season and extends its winning streak to four games. The Cyclones will host Baylor next Saturday in a Big 12 Conference matchup.

“We’re not going to let this win go to our heads,” said Campbell. “We have a lot of work left to do. We’re going to enjoy this one tonight, but we’ll be back to work tomorrow getting ready for Baylor.”
