United Airlines Flight From Nigeria to US Makes Emergency Landing

A United Airlines flight from Lagos, Nigeria to Washington, D.C., United States made an emergency landing in Lagos on Friday, March 10, 2023, after experiencing a technical issue.

The Boeing 787-8 aircraft, with 245 passengers and 11 crew members on board, encountered an “unexpected aircraft movement” during the flight, according to United Airlines.

As a result of the issue, the flight diverted back to Lagos and landed safely. Four passengers and two flight attendants were taken to the hospital with injuries but have since been discharged.

Cause of the Issue

United Airlines is working with aviation authorities in both the United States and Nigeria to determine the cause of the technical issue that led to the emergency landing.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) stated that the aircraft did not sustain any major damage.

FAA Inspections

It’s worth noting that in 2024, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ordered inspections of hundreds of Boeing 787 aircraft after a Latam Airlines jet experienced a sudden drop mid-air.

Boeing’s Response

Boeing did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider, which was sent outside of regular business hours.
