Coaching Staff Hopes Move Will Ignite Offensive Production
DeVito, a fourth-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, will make his first career start on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers at MetLife Stadium. He replaces Daniel Jones, who has completed just 59.2% of his passes for 829 yards, four touchdowns, and five interceptions this season.
“We need a spark,” head coach Brian Daboll said. “Tommy has shown us some good things in practice, and we think he gives us the best chance to win right now.”
DeVito was a highly touted recruit coming out of high school, but he struggled to live up to expectations at Syracuse. He threw for 4,000 yards and 39 touchdowns in three seasons with the Orange, but he also had 21 interceptions.
The Giants are hoping that DeVito can bring a different element to the offense. He is a more mobile quarterback than Jones, and he has a stronger arm.
“I’m just trying to go out there and do my job,” DeVito said. “I’m confident in my abilities, and I’m excited to get out there and show what I can do.”
Offensive Line Struggles Continue To Be A Concern
The Giants’ offensive line has been a major problem area all season, and it does not appear that things will get any easier with DeVito under center.
The Packers have one of the best pass rushes in the NFL, led by reigning Defensive Player of the Year T.J. Watt. The Giants will need to find a way to protect DeVito if they want to have any chance of winning.
“We know we have our work cut out for us,” said right tackle Evan Neal. “But we’re confident in our ability to keep Tommy upright and give him time to make plays.”
Outlook For The Season Remains Uncertain
The Giants are now 3-1 on the season, but their offense has been one of the worst in the NFL. They are averaging just 16.5 points per game, and they have failed to score more than 20 points in any of their four contests.
The switch to DeVito is a sign that the Giants are desperate for a change. But it remains to be seen whether or not he can provide the spark that the offense needs.
If DeVito can play well and the Giants can start winning games, the outlook for the season will brighten considerably. But if the offense continues to struggle, the Giants could be in for a long year.
