A Vibrant Tribute to a Beloved Star
The Broadway community gathered at the Imperial Theatre on Wednesday, August 31st, to pay tribute to Tony-winning actor and singer Gavin Creel, who tragically passed away at the age of 49 on July 23rd.
The memorial service, hosted by playwright and director Michael Mayer, was a poignant and powerful celebration of Creel’s life and remarkable career. Filled with heartfelt speeches, emotional performances, and infectious laughter, the event showcased the indomitable spirit and undeniable talent of the beloved star.
Music, Laughter, and Love
The service featured performances by some of Creel’s closest friends and collaborators, including Annaleigh Ashford, Rachel Bay Jones, and Amber Gray. Their stunning renditions of songs from Creel’s Broadway musicals, such as “Dear Evan Hansen,” “Hello, Dolly!” and “Waitress,” brought tears to the eyes of attendees.
Interspersed with the music were humorous and touching anecdotes from Creel’s friends, family, and colleagues. Tony Shalhoub recalled Creel’s infectious laugh, while Michael Urie shared stories of their backstage escapades. The audience erupted in laughter as they remembered Creel’s sharp wit and his ability to make everyone around him feel special.
“He Was Everyone’s Favorite Person”
But beneath the laughter and the joy, there was also a palpable sense of heartbreak. Creel was known for his kindness, generosity, and unwavering support for others. As Michael Mayer said, “He was everyone’s favorite person. He was the one you wanted to be with, the one you wanted to talk to, the one you wanted to love.”
Creel’s impact on the Broadway community was immeasurable. He mentored countless young actors and performers, and his advocacy for LGBTQIA+ rights and social justice made him a role model for many.
A Legacy of Love and Inspiration
In the wake of his passing, Creel’s legacy will continue to inspire and uplift others. His talent, his spirit, and his unwavering belief in the power of love will forever be remembered.
As the service concluded, attendees sang a rousing rendition of “For Good” from the musical “Wicked,” a song that had special significance for Creel. The audience then gave Creel a standing ovation that lasted for several minutes, a fitting tribute to a star who touched so many lives.
