CU Buffs Football Stuns TCU in Coach Prime’s Debut
In a resounding start to the Deion Sanders era, the University of Colorado Buffaloes football team (1-1) pulled off a stunning 38-13 upset victory over No. 15 TCU (1-1) on Saturday night.
Sanders’ Coaching Debut
Making his head coaching debut for the Buffs, Deion Sanders, known as “Coach Prime,” orchestrated an impressive performance from his team. Sanders, a College Football Hall of Famer and former NFL star, brought an infectious energy and innovative approach to Boulder.
“I’m so proud of our guys for believing in themselves and executing the game plan,” Sanders said after the game. “This is just the beginning for us, and we’re excited about the future.”
Defensive Dominance
The CU defense was the backbone of the team’s victory, holding TCU to just 13 points and forcing four turnovers. Defensive end Devin Brown had two sacks and three tackles for loss, while linebacker Evan Hull intercepted two passes.
“We played with a lot of heart and determination tonight,” Brown said. “We knew TCU was a tough opponent, but we refused to give up.”
Offensive Explosion
The Buffs offense also stepped up, amassing 485 yards of total offense. Quarterback JT Shrout threw for 292 yards and two touchdowns, while running back Deion Smith rushed for 128 yards and a touchdown.
“We played with a lot of intensity and execution tonight,” Shrout said. “This win gives us a lot of confidence going forward.”
Implications
The upset win is a major statement for the CU football program and Coach Prime. It marks the first time the Buffs have defeated a ranked opponent since 2016 and sends a strong message that Sanders is capable of turning around the program’s fortunes.
“This is a huge win for our program and our university,” said CU athletic director Rick George. “Coach Prime has brought a renewed energy and excitement to our team, and I’m excited about the future.”
Looking Ahead
The Buffs will look to build on their momentum next week when they face Northern Colorado at Folsom Field. TCU, meanwhile, will try to rebound when they host Tarleton State.
