Haynes King Leads Georgia Tech Past Cam Ward, No. 4 Miami 28-21
Atlanta, GA — Haynes King put together a stellar performance, throwing for 305 yards and two touchdowns to lead Georgia Tech past No. 4 Miami 28-21 on Saturday night in Atlanta.
King Takes Command
King, a transfer from Texas A&M, completed 23 of 33 passes, including touchdown strikes to Nate McCollum and Dillon Gage. He also ran for 37 yards.
“I thought Haynes played really well,” said Georgia Tech coach Brent Key. “He made some big-time throws in some critical situations.”
Miami’s Offense Stumbles
Miami’s offense, led by quarterback Cam Ward, struggled to find its rhythm. Ward completed 21 of 39 passes for 241 yards and a touchdown, but he was also intercepted twice.
“We didn’t make enough plays,” said Miami coach Mario Cristobal. “We had some opportunities to score, but we just didn’t capitalize on them.”
Defense Steps Up
The Georgia Tech defense played a crucial role in the upset, intercepting Ward three times and forcing two fumbles. Linebacker Ace Eley had two interceptions, while defensive tackle Jaheim Oatis recovered a fumble and returned it for a touchdown.
Significance of the Win
This win was a major statement for Georgia Tech, which is in its first season under Key. It also marks the first time the Yellow Jackets have defeated a top-5 opponent since 2016.
“This is a big win for our program,” said Key. “It shows that we’re headed in the right direction.”
Outlook for Both Teams
Georgia Tech (3-0) will look to continue its momentum when it hosts North Carolina next Saturday. Miami (2-1) will try to bounce back against Southern Miss on Friday night.
