Alyssa Thompson Nets First USWNT Goal In Win Over Iceland

In an exciting international soccer match, 18-year-old forward Alyssa Thompson scored her debut goal for the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) in a 2-0 victory over Iceland at Exploria Stadium in Orlando, Florida. Thompson’s historic strike sealed the win, showcasing the future star’s immense potential.

Thompson, the youngest player on the USWNT roster, entered the game as a substitute in the 77th minute. Just five minutes later, she made an immediate impact. After receiving a pass from Mallory Pugh, Thompson drove into the penalty area and unleashed a powerful shot that found the back of the net.

“It’s a dream come true,” Thompson said after the game. “I’ve been working for this moment my whole life.”

Earlier in the match, midfielder Lindsey Horan set up Emily Sonnett for a header that was saved by Iceland goalkeeper Sandra Sigurdardottir. The rebound, however, fell to midfielder Sophia Smith, who crossed it for defender Alana Cook. Cook’s shot was then saved, but midfielder Taylor Kornieck headed the ball down for forward Ashley Hatch, who was fouled in the penalty area.

Forward Midge Purce stepped up to take the penalty kick, but her attempt was also saved by Sigurdardottir. However, midfielder Kristie Mewis was on hand to tap in the rebound for the opening goal in the 14th minute.

The USWNT defense, anchored by center backs Abby Dahlkemper and Becky Sauerbrunn, held strong throughout the match. Iceland had a few chances to score, but goalkeeper Casey Murphy made several key saves to preserve the clean sheet.

“Our defense played exceptionally well tonight,” USWNT head coach Vlatko Andonovski said. “We were able to limit Iceland’s opportunities and create chances of our own.”

Thompson’s goal is a promising sign for the future of the USWNT. Her ability to score in her first cap demonstrates her potential to become a key player in the years to come.
